ASC Peer Coaches facilitate 1-1 peer coaching sessions with students who require additional assistance with transitioning to the post-secondary environment. They offer support and advice based on their own academic experience and teach learning strategies. The various duties of a Peer Coach can include helping students connect with the school, plan and organize their work, develop time management strategies, problem solve, clarify assignment expectations, brainstorm ideas, become familiar with online platforms, develop social skills, and refer students to appropriate campus services for support. Campus Emergency Response team (CERT) Our team is always looking for passionate individuals willing to dedicate their time to ensure the well being of others. The Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT) are student volunteers who respond to medical emergencies that happen on campus. These student volunteers are trained as First Responders and Emergency Medical Responders. The team is well equipped with medical equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) to assist our campus community needing advanced first aid. CERT recruits volunteers for the September semester and again for the January semester. Training for new volunteers is provided in August, before the start of the term and again in January at the beginning of the term. Enactus Enactus Canada is an organization that is shaping generations of entrepreneurial leaders who are passionate about advancing the economic, social and environmental health of Canada. Guided by academic advisors and business experts, the student leaders of Enactus Canada create and implement community empowerment projects and business ventures in communities coast to coast. Enactus DC is a team of entrepreneurial student leaders at the college who are starting to make a positive economic and social impact in society. In collaboration with established local services, students and staff are applying their knowledge to create self-sustaining projects. During the first year of operation, the Enactus DC team started two projects: We Grow Food using a passive solar green house design and Project Y.O. First Peoples Indigenous Centre (FPIC) Durham College has made a commitment to Indigenization and recognizes that Indigenization is a continuous process requiring each member of our campus community to actively commit to reconciliation with the goal of building respectful, reciprocal relationships that will contribute to better educational outcomes for all students. Suswaaning Endaajig, the First Peoples Indigenous Centre, offers several ways for students to get involved on campus. Our goal is to increase knowledge of Indigenous perspective and ways of knowing to promote decolonization and indigenization. We host monthly Indigenous teachings as well as access to Metis Senators, Traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders so that students can interact and create authentic relationships within the Indigenous Community. International Student Mentorship Program The International Student Mentorship Program (ISMP) provides welcoming mentorship opportunities to first-semester international students by matching first-semester students with an upper-year mentor, who acts as a resource to answer questions, connects mentees with campus resources and services, and offers social support to ease students’ transition to Durham College. Students are matched based on their program of study, common interests or both. The goal of the program is to help new students feel welcomed and supported while developing skills they will need to be successful at DC. Residence Advisors Resident Advisors (RAs) are hired student leaders who offer support and guidance to all residents, while also acting as a liaison with the Residence Life Management Team. Each evening, they offering activities, they work to ensure the safety and security of the building by completing regular rounds, and respond to incidents or concerns within the building. Resident Advisors participate in comprehensive training to have the tools and knowledge to support you, and provide direction or assistance to you for a variety of issues or concerns. You are always welcome to go to an RA if you need someone to talk to. Peer Athletic Leaders (PAL) are hired student leaders in partnership with the Department of Athletics and Recreation. PALs, as part of the Residence Life Department and the Department of Athletics and Recreation, work to foster a community environment that eases the student transition into college/university, and supports the physical wellness of residence students. PALs participate in comprehensive training to have the tools and knowledge to support you, and provide direction or assistance to you for a variety of issues or concerns.
