Alertus The Alertus App is our primary channel to inform students and employees of high priority, active threats on campus that have the potential to affect their immediate safety (such as secure and hold or urgent evacuation). In an emergency, we will communicate through as many channels as possible, including: AlertAware App Alertus beacon Alertus desktop notification Lockdown External Audible Alarm (LEAA) Social Media Campus Status Alert on durhamcollege.ca DC email Digital signage Public address system (PA) DC App AlertAware App Getting Started Durham College (DC) is using AlertAware to support personal recipient emergency notifications. DC’s emergency alerts may be delivered via one or all of the following: SMS text Email Voice call Push notification to the AlertAware Mobile App iOS Download the app Android Download the app AlertAware App Instructions AlertAware Self-Registration Process for Students The self-registration process can be completed on a browser or your mobile phone. The first step is to self-register to receive emergency alerts via DC’s self-registration portal. Scan the QR code to the left using your smartphone, or you can access the DC student URL here. Complete the Sign-up Form. Enter your first name. Enter your last name. Enter your DC email address with the domain “dcmail.ca”. Enter your phone number; this entry is required if you intend to receive SMS text or voice call alerts. Enter student PIN “2000”. Create and enter a password. Review the Terms and Conditions and check the selection box. Click the Submit button. REGISTRATION After clicking on Submit, you should receive a confirmation screen: Registration complete! Please check your email to complete your account setup. Next, go to your DC email account to receive your New Invitation email from no-reply@alertaware.com. Click on Complete Account Setup. Sign in to AlertAware using your DC email address and the password you created. SIGN UP Select the desired form language. Opt-in or opt-out to receiving push notifications (i.e., mobile app alerts) by clicking the check box next to Yes or No, I do not want to receive push notifications, then click Proceed. Select No, I do not want to allow location access (location access is only used when the app contains a reporting option). Click Proceed. Select Yes or No, I do not want to authorize to opt-in or opt-out of receiving SMS Notifications. Click Proceed. Select Yes or No, I do not want to authorize to opt-in or opt-out of receiving Voice Notifications. Click Proceed. Select the Yes or No, I do not want to receive email notifications to opt-in or opt-out of receiving email notifications. Click Proceed. If using your computer, click on Log Out. INSTALL APP If you opted in to receiving push alerts, install the AlertAware Mobile App on your mobile device. Depending on your smartphone, open the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Search for “AlertAware Mobile”. Click to install the app on your device. Await an email invitation to join. The first time you log in to the AlertAware Mobile App, AlertAware will ask if you allow AlertAware to send you notifications. Click on Allow. AlertAware will next ask if you would like to allow AlertAware to send you critical alerts. Click on Allow if you would like to receive alerts when your device is set to Do Not Disturb. Review the Terms and Conditions and check the selection box. Your visitor subscription to the AlertAware App will be active for 60 days. Then Sign In by entering your registered Email address and Password, then click Sign In. Alertus Beacon In certain areas of campus where it is determined public address announcements are not sufficient or in labs and areas where a computer is not readily available, an Alertus beacon device may be installed on a wall. When the beacon is activated, a lighting system will flash, a high-pitched alarm will sound, and messaging will appear in the text area. Lockdown External Audible Alarm (LEAA) LEAA has been installed at both the Oshawa and Whitby campuses to alert anyone outdoors on campus of a lockdown situation within the campus buildings. LEAA will only be activated to alert the community about an immediate, active threat and will only be audible outdoors on campus in areas such as the bus loop, parking lot, the Centre for Food (CFF) gardens at the Whitby Campus, etc. When you hear the alarm: Attempt to flee the campus if you are in immediate danger. Avoid entering the buildings, unless safe to do so, and then immediately follow lockdown guidelines. Play this video to hear how the LEAA sounds.
