This course provides students with introductory knowledge about diverse populations, faiths and cultures. Students will examine societal issues that contribute to crime and self-harm amongst youth. There will also be a focus on methods of preventing crime or recidivism amongst youth. Laws and services that contribute to the perceptions, protection or exploitation of youth will be explored. Students will be introduced to the Young Offenders Act and the principles and laws contained within it that address recidivism, alternative measures, deterring crime and protecting society. The historical progression of laws and philosophy that influenced the Youth Criminal Justice Act and previous acts such as Juvenile Delinquents Act and the Young Offender's Act will be explored.
