This subject is designed to introduce the dental hygienists role as a preventive oral health educator to the individual client in any professional setting. Principles of client motivation, questioning and predictive factors are explored to support adherence of mechanical oral biofilm control for the individual. Preventive Dental Hygiene builds upon the student's previous Microbiology subject. Students will determine appropriate preventive and therapeutic interventions including promotion of becoming tobacco free, while considering the client's tooth sensitivity, halitosis concerns, needs, literacy, values, health determinants and abilities. Caries Management by Risk Assessment protocol and various therapeutic interventions will be discussed. This subject provides an opportunity to discover credible literature to remain current in preventive best practices.
