Field Placement

Placement provides students with the experience of applying for and obtaining valuable, relevant work experience related to their program of study. In this course students will complete essential Health and Safety, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training, Accessibility Ontarians Disability Act training (AODA), Introduction to Diversity, and Workplace Violence and Harassment Prevention training to prepare them for the workplace. With the support of the Placement Coordinator, the student will identify and apply for placement opportunities in their field and ultimately is responsible for obtaining a placement position. Field placements can be scheduled during the week, on weekends, over the winter break and Reading Weeks, at the end of April after course material is complete, or over the summer months. All students completing 80 hrs of unpaid field placement are provided with WSIB coverage through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU). CHUBB provides private insurance coverage for students completing unpaid placements with employers not covered under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act. A special stand alone insurance policy will be coordinated for all unpaid placement students completing a placement on campus at Durham College. This course, along with our academic and industry partners, provide valuable work integrated learning opportunities for students through their field placement. Field placements give students hands-on experience, in real world settings, which connect the classroom to related industries and integrate students into the workforce.
