The Durham College Alumni Association (DCAA) Leaders of the Future Award

Description

This award is presented annually to graduating students who have demonstrated consistent and outstanding leadership both inside and outside of the classroom.

Criteria

Nominees will have:

  • Taken significant steps to enhance campus life for fellow students.
  • Actively participated in a campus project that builds (or will build in the near future) an enhanced sense of community.
  • Advocated on behalf of other students to create positive change on campus.
  • Established partnerships and built common ground among students, the campus, and the community.
  • Inspired and motivated others to become engaged and involved in campus life.
  • Demonstrated genuine care for others by encouraging divergent viewpoints and multiple perspectives.

Additionally, nominees must:

  • Be eligible to graduate.
  • Be in good standing with the Office of Campus Safety.

SELECTION

All nomination forms will be reviewed by the Student Leadership Awards selection committee. Recipients will be selected based on the DCAA Leaders of the Future Award Rubric.

Fifteen – Spring graduates

Nomination Description

Students may self-nominate, be nominated by a peer or be nominated by another member of the Durham College community including employees or alumni.

The President’s Award

Description

The President’s Award is presented annually to the Durham College student who best demonstrates the attributes of leadership, learning, integrity and involvement in a variety of campus activities. The recipient’s behaviour reflects the values of the institution, and has significantly impacted the campus community by creating an environment supportive of student success for years to come.

Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Maintenance of a good academic standing.
  • Involvement in campus activities.
  • Demonstration of community citizenship.

Number of Awards Available

One award annually.

Presented at Spring Convocation Ceremony.

Nomination Process

The President’s Award winner will be selected from the pool of applicants for the DCAA Leaders of the Future Award. Apply for this award. Fall graduates will be considered for this award in Spring 2023.

The Doris and Gordon Willey Founders Cup of Excellence Award

Description

The Founder’s Cup for Excellence was presented to Durham College on November 30, 1999 by Doris Willey in memory of her husband, Dr. Gordon E. Willey, the college’s founding president (1969-1980).

This award, with its financial honorarium, is presented annually to the Durham College student who best demonstrates the attributes of scholarship, leadership, integrity and involvement in college affairs. This reflects the concept of Dr. Willey’s original choice for the college motto – Excellence Through Perseverance.

Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Maintenance of a good academic standing.
  • Involvement in campus activities.
  • Demonstration of community citizenship.
  • Illustration of how he or she achieved excellence through perseverance.
  • Exemplifies the values of Durham College.

One award annually

Application process

Applicants for this award must submit their electronic application package to the Student Development Manager via email to Lucy.RomaoVandepol@durhamcollege.ca. Fall graduates will be considered for this award in Spring 2023.

  • Spring nomination deadline: April 26, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

Application package must contain:

  • A short paper (no more than 1000 words) identifying how nominee has demonstrated “Excellence through perseverance”
  • Supporting reference letters

City of Oshawa Centennial Award

Description

The City of Oshawa was incorporated on March 8, 1924, and will celebrate its centennial year on March 8, 2024. In honour of the centennial year the City of Oshawa will be awarding two students enrolled in the three Oshawa post-secondary institutions (Durham College, Trent University and Ontario Tech University) with the Oshawa Centennial Award.

The awards will recognize Oshawa students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, community service, leadership potential and display financial need. This is a one-time funded award made available for 2024.

Criteria

Applicants will:

  • Be an Oshawa resident who graduated from an Oshawa high school
  • Have applied to an undergraduate degree/ diploma program at Durham College for the Fall 2023 intake.
  • Have demonstrated superior academic achievement (B average of equivalent standard) from your first semester of college.
  • Have demonstrated leadership through community service or excellence in the arts, sports, or other areas of individual achievement.

Applicants will be asked to speak to the above criteria using a written statement (maximum 500 words) or video submission (3 – 5 minutes long).

References may be requested.

Number of Awards Available

Two awards of $2,000 each are available for the year.

The award will be presented on the Official City of Oshawa 100th Anniversary date on March 8, 2024.

Durham College Alumni Association CICE Outstanding Graduate Award

Description

This award will be presented annually to one or two students graduating from the CICE program who have displayed a commitment to making a positive impact on the program in and outside of the classroom.

Criteria

To be considered for the Durham College Alumni Association CICE Outstanding Graduate Award, students must be part of the CICE program.

Students nominated for this award will have:

  • made a positive impact on their peers establishing meaningful relationships and demonstrating genuine care, kindness, and concern for others.
  • regularly displayed a conscientious attitude including honesty, integrity, and reliability.
  • showed significant growth in their independence and advocacy skills.
  • actively participated in their program and courses.
  • motivated others to participate actively in their program and courses.

SELECTION

All nominations will be reviewed by the selection committee which will be made up of the CICE team, including the CICE Team Lead, Learning Facilitators, faculty, and partners.

One or Two Awards will be presented annually at Spring Convocation.
