Course List & Descriptions

Semester 1

Semester 2

Students are expected to create documents for client projects, portfolios, and job search activities. The course will cover software applications in order for students to create professional documents to assist the business decision making process.  Applications covered will include Microsoft Excel 2010, Microsoft Outlook 2010, Microsoft Access 2010, and Microsoft Publisher 2010.  It is expected that students have a basic understanding of Microsoft Word 2010 and PowerPoint 2010.  These will be briefly reviewed and further explored if necessary.

This course is aimed at giving a practical overview and understanding of the fundamentals of marketing and the selling process and their key role in business.  Material to be covered will include the psychology of selling, communication strategies, various sales methodologies, the marketing process, marketing mix, marketing research, and consumer/business buying behaviour.

Financial management builds on concepts from accounting and economics. Basic economic theory will be used throughout so students understand how money is raised for capital projects and operations of sport organizations. Not-for-profit organizations, their issues and challenges, will be examined in addition to the profit oriented enterprise. Topics include: the time value of money, sources of capital, current economic environment, subsidy, economic impact analysis, revenues, management of expenses, and the use of public funds for sport facilities.

To represent an organization well, writing and speaking are critical in sport. Corporate communications involves the skills of public relations, journalism, publicity and media relations. Students will gain hands-on experience developing skills in each of these areas as they apply to the sport world. By simulating a professional and demanding workplace environment, students will develop skills in corporate communications.

This course will give students an overview of aspects that will lead to successful sport events as they will gain an understanding of the planning and activities needed for proper event management from the early stages through to post-event tasks. Building on that, the course will then examine a range of strategies to successfully market the event focusing on sponsorship, promotions and ticket sales. Students will have the opportunity to put course concepts into practice by planning, executing and evaluating an on-campus sport business conference.

This subject is divided into two components:  career management essentials and business management essentials.

One of the key strengths of the Sport Business Management program is the internship program which offers students the unique opportunity to combine practical work experiences and learning opportunities linking theory to practice. Students work five days per week at a field placement agency from January to April (15 weeks) for a sport/recreation related business or organization. The internship allows students to work with and learn from professionals in the sport/recreation field.

Courses and course descriptions are for the next academic year and are subject to change.
