R.I.S.E Program The REACH. INCLUDE. SUPPORT. ELEVATE. (R.I.S.E.) Program is designed to maximize the opportunities that a post-secondary education can offer equity-deserving prospective and current students by supporting them in achieving their personal and professional goals. The program comprises eight initiatives that advance systemic change across the campus environment while also providing equity-deserving students with access to direct supports and servicesfrom college application to graduation to build needed skills, and internal and external support networks. The R.I.S.E Program provides: Community and DC-based service navigation and referrals Access to mentorship and networking opportunities Connection to identity-based community care programs Capacity-building to students and employees How Can We Help You The R.I.S.E program provides services and support, through three main pillars: Outreach: Our office works with equity/community groups to create pathways to post-secondary and empower students to realize that post-secondary education is a viable option for them. Access and Transition promotes successful academic and social transitions once students are enrolled at Durham College, in addition to providing service navigation to a multitude of student support services available on campus. Retention: Ensures that once enrolled, students from equity-deserving populations have the community and support they need to achieve their full potential and reach their education and career-oriented goals. Who is eligible? Students with disabilities First-generation students Racialized students Indigenous students Newcomers to Canada 2SLGBTQIA+ students Low-income students Secondary school students with low credit accumulation and low achievement rates Adults who have not completed their Ontario Secondary School Diploma Students in rural or remote communities with limited access to outreach/transition supports R.I.S.E. Programs There are eight different initiatives and services the OEDI offers to equity-deserving students through the R.I.S.E. Program: RISE UP RISE UP is an initiative that seeks to provide mentorship, training, and other supports to identity-based student groups to bolster their efforts to create opportunities to build meaningful connections with their peers and communities in an inclusive environment. RISE Navigation Rise Navigation provides one-on-one support to current and prospective equity-deserving students navigating the various services and systems within the post-secondary learning environment, to facilitate meaningful access, engagement and inclusion. RISE N’ Thrive RISE N' Thrive helps nurture a sense of belonging for equity-deserving students by facilitating spaces where everyone, regardless of their beliefs and practices, can find comfort and connection to community. RISE N’ Learn RISE N' Learn equips all DC students with the knowledge, skills and resources needed to help create a learning environment where those who are equity-deserving know they belong and experience reduced interpersonal oppression. Through the Rise N’ Learn program, students can learn about the experiences and contributions of key equity-deserving groups; how to uphold their human rights; and how to respond appropriately to discrimination, harassment, hate, and violence against them. RISE Together RISE Together is our Community of Practice (CoP) through which we collaborate with community partners to identify and address intersectional barriers faced by equity-deserving community members in accessing and transitioning to post-secondary education. RISE at DC Through RISE at DC, we work collaboratively with community partners and DC's Student Recruitment team to increase awareness of the resources, supports, and services available to prospective and current equity-deserving students at DC. Through community outreach and relationship-building, the program provides supports to help individuals increase their likelihood of accessing post-secondary education. RISE to Lead RISE to Lead contributes to a campus culture where equity-deserving students know they belong by increasing awareness, promoting inclusion, and equipping employees with the tools to respond effectively to equity-related concerns impacting students. This is achieved through training opportunities, resource sharing, and increased awareness of OEDI services and supports. Department or team leads can request a training for their teams here. RISE to Include RISE to Include is designed to help create a more equitable and supportive learning and working environment for all students and employees. Through this program we provide consultations to department leads to identify systemic and widespread barriers to equity, and assist them with enhancing their policies/procedures/programs to address these barriers Department or team leads can request a consultation here.
