Program Description

This two-year diploma program will provide you with advanced computer skills and a specialized education that will prepare you for a career as a legal office assistant. Emphasis is placed on the practical demands of the job including confidentiality, professional ethics, meeting deadlines and interpersonal relations.

You will gain a basic understanding of the core areas of legal office administration with emphasis on the practices and procedures of law including:

  • Civil litigation
  • Corporate
  • Criminal
  • Family law
  • Landlord and tenant
  • Real estate

Specialized terminology and documentation will form the basis on which your keyboarding, word processing and electronic transcription skills are developed. In addition, emphasis will be placed on accuracy, improving communication skills and developing human relations.

Computers are an integral part of the legal office environment and you will become familiar with the most commonly used legal software. Keyboarding skills will be assessed upon entry to the program and then improved upon through keyboarding lessons, drill and timed writings. A final keyboarding speed of 50 net words per minute is the objective upon graduation.

This course enables students to use the computer as a tool for word processing and file management.  Working in a Windows 7 environment students will receive training on basic Word2010 software features.  Then these skills will be transferred and practiced on preparing various styles of legal correspondence, memoranda and legal documents.  Student will also develop strong and accurate keyboarding skills using Keyboarding Pro.  

This course is designed to introduce the students to the parties involved in the law in Canada.  A brief history of the development of Canada’s legal system and an overview of the sources and divisions of law set the stage for a detailed examination of the Constitution and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and the court system in Canada.  Students are introduced to tort law, family law, and roles of the various players in the legal system.  This course is meant to give students a general understanding of how laws are defined, created, implemented, and interpreted to give them a strong foundation to build upon in their core legal courses.  

This course is designed to provide students with the foundation in communication skills necessary to succeed in their program and in their careers as legal administrators.  The principles of writing and editing will be examined to enable the students to produce ‘final copy’ documents.  Basic writing skills will be developed through in-class exercises, assignments and tests.  Summary writing skills, which are essential in the legal environment, will be examined and practiced.  The McGill style of legal documentation will be introduced to students.

This introductory course helps students better understand the criminal justice system and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It provides a basic overview of the general principles of substantive criminal law and procedures.

In this introductory level course, students learn to apply knowledge of interpersonal relations and group dynamics to working within a team.  Emphasis will be placed on utilizing effective communication skills (both verbal and written) with individuals and groups.  Group cohesiveness and group decision making will be discussed and applied.

This is an introductory financial accounting course that teaches the basic principles of financial law office accounting and incorporates the use of PCLaw - a time, billing and accounting software design for used by business in the legal industry. Accounting topics include: working with debits and credits in double-entry accounting, and preparing and understanding financial statements.  PCLaw is used to apply the principles of accounting to complete the accounting cycle of several types of client matters in a legal practice.  Particular emphasis is given to time entries, billing, disbursements, trust funds and matter management. This course also interprets the Law Society By-Laws and Rules of Professional Conduct as they apply to financial management of a law practice.

This course provides students with an opportunity to become effective learners through sourcing college support services, and developing and reflecting upon the necessary skills and strategies to deal with the challenges of the post-secondary education environment, and ultimately the legal environment as a workplace.  Students will be exposed to techniques to assist in time management, organizational skills, note-taking, personal wellness and other self-management topics.  This course also provides students with an overview of the role and basic responsibilities of a legal support professional.  The content of this course is designed to provide the student with a solid foundation for success in both their academic and career choice.

Through this course, students learn about alternative, dispute resolution methods to litigation. Emphasis is placed on negotiation, mediation and arbitration in voluntary and mandatory situations. As well, students examine the objectives, principles, practice and application of different alternative dispute resolution methods.

During this hands-on course, students will learn and practice advanced word-processing skills using Microsoft Word2010 as well as MSPowerPoint.  Students will integrate and adapt the appropriate technology to legal documents and situations pertaining to a legal environment, including dicta transcription.  Keyboarding skills will be further developed for speed and accuracy.

This course builds upon the skills learned and developed in Communications for Office Professionals I and is designed to provide student with the ability to apply communication skills frequently using by office administrators.  The areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking will each be examined and further developed.  professional communication skills be developed through practical application of listening, note taking, preparation of meeting agendas and minutes, writing business letters, communicating with technology, researching and analyzing, producing written reports and giving verbal presentations.

This course is designed for the student who have completed an intermediate level of keyboarding and who wish to specialize in the field of legal work.  The course will cover basic residential real estate and the preparation of basic residential real estate conveyancing documentation in Ontario.  Documents used in law offices and the Land Registry offices in Ontario will be learned and practised until they can be completed quickly and accurately with a minimum of instruction or supervision.  Legal forms will be prepared using legal software, including Conveyancer, Teraview, and E-Reg.

This course is designed for the student who has completed an intermediate level of keyboarding and wishes to specialize in the field of legal work. Documentation used in law firms and court offices will be learned and practised until they can be completed quickly and accurately with a minimum of instruction or supervision.  Corporate law is common practice areas in both small and large law firms.  The course will provide the student with the basic knowledge and skills to assist law firms and corporations with their corporate needs.

Students will gain insight into the world of customer service.  They will develop problem solving skills, and formulate strategies for dealing effectively with a diverse range of customers. Students will discuss the relationship between empowerment, communications, motivation, and leadership in customer retention and recovery.

This course introduces the students to the basic vocabulary and principles of psychology and the law. It also investigates the major theories and research related to the scientific issues faced by psychologists and legal professionals.  Students will be encouraged to develop an understanding of the underlying principles of human behaviour in a legal and/or criminal justice environment. In addition, students will gain insight into how and why psychology and the law co-exist and the contributions both make in the study of human behaviour.

This course examines the Residential Tenancies Act and regulations in detail with respect to the rights and responsibilities of both landlords and tenants.  Students will gain a working knowledge of the applicable Landlord and Tenant Board forms for a variety of legal issues arising in the context of residential rental housing, including fault grounds and non-fault grounds for termination.  Students will also gain a thorough understanding of service requirements, time limits, rent control, process, procedure and evidence before the Landlord and Tenant Board as well as the types of relief the Board can grant.

Students learn about the role of the small claims court in administering justice in Ontario. This course provides students with an understanding of the standard procedures in the Superior Court of Justice, with particular reference to the history, rules, practice and procedures governing actions brought to small claims court.  Students work primarily with the Rules of the Small Claims Court.
