Residential Landlord & Tenant Law - Madr

This course examines mediation in the context of the Residential Tenancies Act and regulations in detail with respect to the rights and responsibilities of both landlords and tenants. Students will gain a working knowledge of the mediator's monologue and the applicable mediation concepts surrounding conflict, negotiation, authority to bind, binding agreements, facilitative vs. evaluative mediators, and the parameters that exist in a mediation. Students will engage in mock mediations throughout the semester to broaden their skills and to contemplate how to remedy various circumstances that may arise in mediations. Students will also gain a thorough understanding of the mediation process and circumstances surrounding successful and unsuccessful mediations. Ethical and professional obligations will also be examined.
