Adult Neurogenic Disorders and Rehabilitation I

Emphasis is placed on acquired conditions commonly associated with cerebrovascular accident (CVA). This course focuses primarily on the associated communication disorders in the adult population (i.e., aphasia, apraxia and right hemisphere syndrome). Basic neuroanatomy and normal speech and language functions are reviewed, along with changes in speech, language and cognitive-communication abilities. Cause, neuroanatomical basis, intervention principles and techniques as well as the impact on families and caregivers are discussed. Students are exposed to a sample of assessment and screening tools, reports, intervention tools and activities, and strategies reflective of various treatment approaches. The role of the Communicative Disorders Assistant in implementing program recommendations is emphasized throughout the course.
