Design and Conceptual Process

This course introduces students to the art and science of design with a special emphasis on typography, digital colour, composition, imagery and ideation. Students make strategic colour choices and craft well-designed typographic layouts. They learn the essential principles of typography as they apply to comprehension, legibility and information hierarchy. Students also explore the social, emotive and symbolic aspects of colour. As their knowledge of typography, colour and imagery increases, students will be introduced to the fundamental design principles including rhythm, balance, scale, texture, patterns, framing, hierarchy, and grids. Using the conceptual process, students will imagine new applications for web and integrated media technologies, incorporating what they have learned in layouts and mock designs.
