Foundations Of Child and Youth Care Methods

This course is designed to introduce students to the concepts, principles and procedures underlying the domains of practice found in the Child and Youth Care profession. Students will be introduced to the domains of practice and establish an understanding of their individual role as a Child and Youth Care professional within the domains. Emphasis in this introductory course is placed on engaging with children, youth and families using life space interventions while understanding the research in which life space is based on. The life space concept of working with children in their current and present physical, mental, relational and virtual spaces will be thoroughly discussed and applied. An exploration of crisis intervention theory and its application will also be delivered. The material builds on the student's general knowledge of life space and focuses on concepts central to crisis work. This course is grounded in evidence based practice and will explain social research and provide practical knowledge needed for students to access, evaluate and implement knowledge.
