CAD for Biomedical

This course revolves around a single project in which students working in groups develop and build a linear power supply unit for electronic devices that may be re-used for Year 3 project courses. Course activities include: schematic capture with Proteus ISIS, circuit simulation with Proteus VSM, firmware development in C++ for an Arduino compatible microcontroller, printed circuit board (PCB) design and layout with Proteus ARES, actual PCB assembly (soldering, troubleshooting and testing) and case fabrication. As part of the power supply production, students must document the development work in a formal technical report. The course also introduces students to printed circuit board technology and design for manufacturing. Specific biomedical aspects for electrical safety, troubleshooting and reliability are examined in detail.
