Theories, Models and Approaches to Mental Health, Addiction & Psychotherapy

This course provides a broad overview of a range of mental health theories and treatment models, with a more detailed focus on theories and models most commonly used in community mental health settings in Southern Ontario. A range of theories and models are addressed in the course, with a more detailed focus on the following: Person-Centred approaches, Behavioural approaches and Recovery-Oriented approaches. The theory of pathology, theory of change and common therapeutic strategies arising from each approach will be highlighted. The benefits and limitations of each approach will also be explored. Students will also be required to address the impact of the practitioner's 'self' on alignment with specific theories and models of treatment.
