Deputy Minister of Education to honour Durham College Centre for Success graduates

January 12, 2010

Program to celebrate fourth year of post-secondary pathways with ceremony on campus

OSHAWA, ON. - Ontario's Deputy Minister of Education Kevin Costante will join more than 100 secondary school students at Durham College Oshawa's campus next Monday as they celebrate the completion of their studies through the Centre for Success program. The program, operated by Durham College, helps decrease secondary school dropout rates by engaging students in a college environment and demonstrating the many pathways to post-secondary education.

In addition to Deputy Minister Costante, students will be joined by their families, representatives from Durham College and teachers and principals from the Durham District, Durham Catholic District, Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Catholic District and Kawartha Pine Ridge District school boards.

This year's event marks the fourth successful year of the educational initiative, which began as a pilot project at J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate in Ajax, Ontario in 2006. The project has grown significantly since then, more than quadrupling its original enrolment and developing support and partnerships from numerous school boards, colleges and universities along the way. By completing the program, most of this year's students will have fulfilled their Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirements and successfully completed one college course.

Supported by the Ontario Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities' School College Work Initiative, the Centre for Success offers students an opportunity to study outside of a high school environment and consider their post-secondary options. While completing their high school diploma, students are provided with access to support systems and amenities and experience small classes and hands-on teaching.
