OSHAWA, Ont. - This morning, Durham College celebrated the end of an era and the beginning of exciting things to come as Leah Myers entered the campus for the first time in her role as president, since being appointed to her new position at the beginning of February. Myers is the fourth individual to hold the title of president since Durham College opened its doors in the fall of 1967.

"The Durham College Board of Governors and the entire college community welcomes Leah Myers to campus today," said Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann, chair of the Board. "We look forward to watching the many ways in which she will shape the continued excellence of Durham College."

Myers comes to the college with over 15 years of experience working on post-secondary education and training issues in the Ontario Public Service. Most recently she played a key role in the design and start-up of the Ministry of Research and Innovation, a new ministry led by Premier Dalton McGuinty and was also the executive director of the secretariat that provided research, policy, consultation, communication and project support to the Postsecondary Review conducted by the Honourable Bob Rae.

"I am thrilled to officially be part of Durham College, and look forward to building upon the strong partnerships and long-standing traditions of excellence the college is known for," said Myers as she toured the campus earlier this morning. "I am committed to working closely with students, faculty and staff to ensure Durham College remains 100 percent focused on our number one priority - the success of our students."

Myers takes over the college from long-time president, Dr. Gary Polonsky. Polonsky will continue as president of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology until his successor is announced.
