• Peer Tutoring program

What is college peer tutoring?

The Peer Tutoring program matches Durham College students experiencing difficulties in specific courses with upper year tutors who have successfully completed these courses.

Who can apply?

Any student taking full-time courses at Durham College who requires assistance to master a particular course may qualify. All tutoring is subject to tutor availability and every effort is made to secure tutors for as many subjects as possible.

How and when do I apply?

Applications for tutorial assistance may be picked up in the LSC, SW201. Whitby students may access tutoring through Whitby campus Student Services, in Room 108.

If you would like a one-on-one tutor for a particular subject, please print and fill out this application form for college peer tutoring services [This file will open in a new window]. Completed application forms, including professors' signatures are returned to the LSC and an appointment is booked to meet with the peer tutoring co-ordinator.

In order to benefit fully from the program, students are encouraged to apply as soon as they begin to experience difficulty with a subject.

Who can tutor?

Any upper year Durham College student who has a G.P.A. of 3.00 or higher, is an Ontario resident and shows a demonstrated financial need, may apply to become a peer tutor. Tutors must have a grade of B or higher in the subjects they wish to tutor.

Students wishing to tutor must first apply by completing an application for on-campus employment which is on MyCampus. Students who are deemed financially eligible will be notified via MyCampus and then can fill out this application for college peer tutoring job [This file will open in a new window] and submit it to the peer tutoring co-ordinator. An interview with the peer tutoring co-ordinator will be arranged when the completed application is submitted.

Tutors are paid an hourly rate. This rate is determined on a yearly basis.

Is there a cost involved?

Yes. Students may access up to 30 hours of tutoring for a $5 non-refundable fee. This fee amounts to only $0.16 per hour. It is payable at the time of the student's approval appointment with the peer tutoring co-ordinator.
