Orientation is the ideal way for your student to begin the year. Our orientation programming is specifically designed to help your student:
- Make new friends;
- Mingle with faculty;
- Learn about our campus; and
- Discover the many exciting opportunities that we have to offer.
During Orientation Week our Student Life office is committed to offering fun, safe and alcohol-free orientation activities to help new students adjust to campus life.
Learning at college is quite different from high school. Your student is:
- Studying in much larger classes;
- Being introduced to high-tech teaching methods; and
- Responsible for balancing personal interests along with a heavier course load.
As family members you are also experiencing a transition, whether your student is commuting from home, living on campus or in another location. By continuing to communicate openly and trusting your student to make wise decisions, each of you will feel supported and able to celebrate this exciting time.
Students are:
- Feeling excited;
- Making new friends;
- Experiencing homesickness; and
- Feeling overwhelmed.
You can support them by:
- Encouraging participation in Orientation Week activities;
- Staying in touch and listening - often your student will need to vent more than need advice;
- Believing in and trusting in your student; and
- Encouraging him or her to get involved in campus life.
