Your student is returning home after being away and living independently. It is important that you discuss and clarify your expectations and his or her responsibilities. This will help speed up the adjustment period as you get used to living together again. Over the past year your student has become independent and grown closer to adulthood.
Some students will use the months ahead to take additional courses to make up for one they missed or to plan for a lighter course load in the fall. Not all courses are offered in the summer, so encourage your student to discuss options with their student liaison. Remember, professors are required to cover full course objectives so summer courses are not abbreviated.
Students are:
- Adjusting to a changing support network;
- Reconnecting with old friends; and
- Starting summer jobs.
You can offer support by:
- Helping your student reflect on the past year and set future goals;
- Celebrating his or her accomplishments; and
- Making time to get reacquainted with your student.
